Artist Statement

In response to the many choices and conflicts in life, my work has developed a voice and style that appears simple and whimsical within a framework of dark humor.  There is constantly dialogue occurring within me that reveals a deeper meaning to my process. I focus on a zone that exists between the idealism of free diversity and the reality of imposed limitations. Conceptually, the work parallels postmodern pluralism by creating sculpture that is defined through its collective range of options.  My work is based on a reduction of form. Common linear borders are shared to create multiple features that convey a sense of visual fluidity. This composition of rhythm creates an appearance of no beginning or end.

Abstracting the figure as a self-portrait allows me to address personal feelings within a sense of anonymity. I create figurative forms that convey a sense of energy through the qualities of natural materials.  The materials I use are meticulously refined on the surface yet maintain characteristics that parallel human vulnerability. The use of exotic woods provides a richness and detail of grain that is vital to the work. The figures are playful in appearance, reminiscent of parts in games often used by children. They convey a feeling of rigidity and at times there is an awkwardness within their gestures.

These abstract forms allow for extreme diversity through their options of reconfiguration.  They address the dynamics of freedom and restriction inspired by personal experiences that have long since past but continue to prevent us from moving forward. I symbolize the human vitality of soul with organic forms and the existence of limitation using metal joints.  The organic shapes must channel through restrictive joints that offer options but clearly control the direction of energy; a metaphor that represents the boundaries of life.  Locking pins limit motion while simultaneously providing the ability to remain intact creating a dichotomy within the interdependency of constraint and comfort.

The wobble figures I create address personal experiences that convert ones life from an assertive existence to one that is submissive.  The figures resemble water buoys with their mobility contingent solely on external elements rather than independently motivated. The direction of their movement is erratic and frantic as the figures react to a situation that is unfamiliar, overwhelming and uncontrollable.

I continue to explore the intangible elements that often dictate the parameters of life and the opportunities to reconfigure ones choices.  Throughout the process it has become apparent to me that some level of surrender must coexist within the realm of limitation to fully experience life.
